Who Was Rebecca Balding?
Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, on September 21, 1948, Balding was passionate about acting from an early age.
She studied drama at the University of Kansas and became a stage actress in Chicago. Her first screen role was in 1977, when she guest-starred in two episodes of the TV show The Bionic Woman.
She went on to appear in other hit shows such as Lou Grant, The Rockford Files and Starsky and Hutch. Her breakout role was as Carol David in the sitcom Soap. Carol was an attorney who has a one-night stand with Billy Crystal’s character, Jodie, and gives birth to their daughter. Balding appeared in 19 episodes of the comedy between 1978 and 1980.
She made guest appearances in a number of TV comedies and dramas in the 1980s and 1990s. Her credits included Cagney & Lacey, Family Ties, MacGyver, Designing Women, Melrose Place and Beverly Hills, 90210.
In Charmed she played the recurring character of Elise Rothman, Phoebe’s boss and friend, from 2002 to 2006. Her final screen appearance was in the show’s penultimate episode, “Kill Billie: Vol. 2.”
Balding also had lead roles in a number of horror movies, including Scotty Parker in Silent Scream and Trish Michaels in The Boogens. Balding and Conway met on the set of the latter, which he directed.
He told People magazine:“I was casting the film The Boogens. Rebecca came in to audition. We chatted, she read and when she left, I turned to the associate producer and said, ‘I could marry that girl.’
“Somehow she got cast. The first week of shooting we went out. That Saturday night, she proposed. And four weeks later, while still shooting, we got married. Of course, no one thought it would last. That was 41 years ago.”
