For over an year now, WWE RAW and SmackDown have provided us the extended three-hour format where we were promised better entertainment and more wrestling. But the WWE hasn’t got any closer to providing what it promised. Quite often we are subjected to boring and frustrating video flashbacks and backstage talk that add less flavor to the show. This is one of the main reasons why both shows, SmackDown in particular, have lost a lot of viewers.
So what is forcing WWE to insert such fillers? It is the lack of a proper feud between wrestlers. Despite the presence of a healthy number in the roster, WWE is unable to find just the right feud for the best. The fact that a few wrestlers just miss two or three episodes in a row just shows how much the WWE is incapable in providing them good matches. Zack Ryder is one such wrestler.
Why is there a sudden inability in the creative team to start a feud? The answer would be the absence of a motive to start a feud. When you put two wrestlers in a match, you expect them to fight for something important. A title maybe. But there are wrestlers who are fighting for the present titles, which leaves many wrestlers fighting each other for no reason at all. Despite WWE’s efforts to bring in feasible storylines here and there, the crowd doesn’t seem too interested in non-title bouts at all, which has forced the WWE to give these wrestlers different roles.
More often than not, we find that it is the lightweight or cruiserweight wrestlers who suffer without proper matches and feuds. Evan Bourne, Santino Marella, Zack Ryder, Heath Slater and several other wrestlers are finding it difficult to get a decent time on TV. Given the talent of these wrestlers, it is important that WWE recognizes it and gives them ample matches on shows.
Bringing back the WWE Cruiserweight Title is the right way for WWE to give these wrestlers some interesting storyline. Not only will these wrestlers get more matches, the fans will also show some interest in these feuds because of the championship belt.
However, just bringing back the Cruiserweight title alone will not solve the problem. It is the responsibility of the creative team to make sure they provide a storyline that is attractive and keeps the fans guessing. It would be great if the WWE brought back tournaments like King of the Ring, which can garner a lot of attention.
Apart from the Cruiserweight title, WWE can also aim at bringing back the Hardcore Championship, but the PG ratings that it is presently under will make it a difficult decision to make for WWE. Hopefully if we get to see a switch back to TV-14, there are chances that WWE can go back to its old hardcore means of wrestling.
